Landslides are one of the major natural hazards, widely occurring in the hilly regions of India. They cause huge loss of lives, damage to road networks, human settlements, agricultural fields, and other natural resources. The Himalayan region, especially the state of Uttarakhand, has witnessed several devastating landslides in the past, leading to significant loss of lives and property.
Therefore, it is critically important to adopt scientific strategies and best practices to reduce the occurrence of landslides and minimize their impact. It is equally essential to develop technologies for the stabilization of chronic and recurring landslides while framing effective policies suitable for Uttarakhand’s fragile ecosystem.
Considering the present disaster scenario, the Government of Uttarakhand has established the Uttarakhand Landslide Mitigation and Management Center (ULMMC) with the objective of identifying landslide-prone areas and providing sustainable, scientific solutions to mitigate these hazards.
The Center functions as a “Center of Excellence”, initially for the state of Uttarakhand and gradually expanding to a PAN India level. It was established vide Government Order No. 204/XVIII-(B-2)/21-05(UDRP-AF)/2021, dated 14.03.2022, and registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
